Some wonder how she even got into the car in the first place. It is also found that Todd was into cars, meaning she would have known to not run the car in an enclosed space for too long. Some like to point out that it is possible she broke her nose when she hit the steering wheel, however that doesn’t account for the other injuries, like the two cracked ribs. Now, let’s dissect everything we just laid out: This theory does not account for the other injuries (the broken nose, bruising around her throat, and two cracked ribs). Todd was also intoxicated during this time, so her decision-making abilities were warped (Sanello, 2021). So, she decided to wait in the car and made the mistake of running the car with the door closed. It is theorized that Todd was locked out of the main building and was unable to get into the home. Todd was wearing a gown, so it was not the warmest. At this time of year, it would have been cold and windy near the beach, so it logically makes sense for Todd to turn on the car for warmth. Let’s first go over how this theory makes sense. There are really only two theories that Thelma Todd (whether accidental or intentionally) committed suicide, or that she was murdered. Some believe that this is evidence of her being picked up again, taken to eat, and then met her fate. The autopsy also found peas and carrots were in Thelma’s system- however, they were not served at the party. Marth Ford stepped stating that she had talked to Todd on Sunday, December 15th at 4:00 pm over the phone. The autopsy concluded that”… monoxide poison, to the extent of 70% total saturation in her blood” (Smith, 2022).Īn acquaintance of Todd’s, Mrs. Todd’s autopsy concluded that she passed around 5 am on Sunday, December 15th. Her death was ruled a suicide due to carbon monoxide poisoning. She had a broken nose, bruising around her throat, and two cracked ribs. Todd was slumped over the wheel of her car. On the following day, December 16, 1935, Todd’s maid discovered her body in the garage. Her driver noted that she was unusually quiet, and did not ask to be escorted to her door like she normally did (Smith, 2022). She was dropped off at her restaurant between 3 and 4:20 am. At 1:50, Todd asked for a friend to call West to tell him she would not be leaving yet. West requested that Todd should return to the home about 500 feet away and above the restaurant (which he shared with his wife) by 2 am. Todd was reported acting normal, drinking, and giving her friends a free meal the following day (Sanello, 2021). On the evening of December 14, 1935, Todd attended a party thrown in her honor at a popular nightclub on the Sunset Strip (that’s in Hollywood, so maybe 30-45 minutes away from Malibu depending on traffic). Their divorce’s reasoning according to Todd was emotional and physical abuse at the hands of DiCicco (Bergara & Madej, 2020). Thelma Todd was married to Pat DiCicco until 1934, a talent agent. The third partner of this business was Jewel Carmen, who was Roland West’s wife. Todd owned the restaurant alongside Roland West (a director and producer), who she had an on-and-off affair with. It is said that famous folks frequented Thelma Todd’s Sidewalk Cafe, including celebrities, politicians, and gangsters. In addition to her day-time job, Todd owned a restaurant along the Pacific Coast Highway, which overlooked the ocean. Todd was a world-famous actress in the 1920s and 1930s, starring in silent films such as “Monkey Business” among other successful comedies. Today, we will be looking at the mysterious death of Thelma Todd. I would drive along the highway near where this crime would take place often. You may know one of them… Mariska Hargitay aka Olivia Benson on Law & Order SVU.This next case hits very close to home, literally. All 3 adults were killed instantly, but miraculously, the children all survived. The car rammed into the tractor-trailer and actually ran completely under the trailer. The people in the 1966 Buick Electra never saw the semi in front of them. It was June 29th, 1967, and Mansfield was traveling with her lover, Sam Brody, her driver, Ronnie Harrison, and 3 of her 5 children en route to New Orleans after an appearance in Biloxi when a dense fog from an anti-mosquito spray drifted over the highway. Sadly, her life, like Marilyn's, would also end tragically on a highway outside Biloxi, Mississippi, but it would save thousands more. Jayne Mansfield was on her way to becoming THE blond bombshell of the 60s, having already achieved a great deal of success as an actress, singer, and even an early Playboy Playmate, and with the tragic passing of Marilyn Monroe, Mansfield was poised to be the new sex symbol of a generation.
